Nantai Crocodile Lake Zoo Nantai
Crocodile Lake Zoo lies in the west of Haikou. It occupies an area of more
than 2000mu. There is expressway to the east of the lake, and sea to the
west. It is 20km away from Haikou, so it is convenient to get there, and
the scenery is very beautiful.
With a total investment of 180,000,000 yuan, the zoo is founded by Mr.
Yang Haiquan from Thailand, who is the Crocodile-breeding King, and
entrepreneur in Hainan. The whole garden is designed in a special way. In
the garden are County Area with Thailand Custom, Children's Area,
Crocodile Show Center and Tiger and Elephant Show Center. There are more
than 10,000 crocodiles in the lake. You can taste crocodile feast cooked
by chefs from Thailand in the Crocodile Restaurant, and buy real crocodile
products in the Crocodile Store here.
Xixiu Seaside Park
Xixiu Seaside Park used to be Xiuying Bathing Beach, which is a national
training base for sailing boats. Next to the Holiday Seaside, Xixiu
Seaside Park occupies 100mu, and the coastline is 1.2km. According to the
plan of the State General Administration of Sports and Haikou municipal
government, Xixiu Seaside Park will be built into a multi-functional
seaside fit for race, sport, relaxation and entertainment, which contains
an international training and competing base for sailing boat, an
international yacht dock, a public beach for swimming and water sports,
and offers seaside tours and related services. The tour items at present
are: Water Sports Center (including motorboat, sailing boat), Seaside
Service Center (including beach football, beach volleyball and sandy beach
arena for entertainment), Sunshine Theatre, Barbecue Ground and Beer
Heaven
Wanlv Garden
Wanlv Garden lies in the eastern part of the Tianhai District of Haikou,
at the middle part of the Binhai Road. The Garden occupies an area of
1070mu. Wanlv Garden gains the features of tropical seaside and ecological
garden. It puts the azure sky, blue seawater, wildness, and modern
building together. It focuses on tropical plants in Hainan, while there
are tropical and sub-tropical plants from other parts of the country. All
these reflect the scenery of the tropical zone, the specialty of the
seaside and the characteristics of the international tourist city.
There are 16 tourist attractions and many places with scenic beauty in
Wanlv Garden, and the scenes are various and the contents are rich. The 16
tourist attractions are the Front Gate Area, the Square, the Inside Lake
Area, Children's Park, the Lawn Area, the Bamboo area, Tropical Plants
Area, Golf Area, and so on.
Tomb of Hai Rui The Tomb of Hai
Rui is a key site under state protection. Hai Rui, born in Qiongshan,
Hainan, was a famous official in the mid Ming Dynasty. He was usually
called "Just Judge" and "Baogong in the South". The
building style in Tomb of Hai Rui is grave and simple. There is a stone
memorial archway at the front gate, and there is an inscribed horizontal
tablet on which the red characters are cut in intaglio. The road to the
tomb is made of granites. In the middle, there are three stone memorial
archways. On each side of the tomb road, there are stone men, stone sheep,
stone horses, stone lions, stone turtles and other stone carvings. Tomb of
Hai Rui was built in the 17th year of Wanli Period (1589), and the Emperor
had the official Xu Ziwei made a special trip to Hainan to supervise the
construction.
At the back of the Tomb, there is a "Yanglian Veranda" extended
recently. On the post of it, there are two antithetical couplets written
by Hai Rui. In front of the veranda, there is a statue of Hai Rui, and at
the back of it is Qingfeng Pavilion, where Hai Rui's life story and some
related historical relics are exhibited.
Bell Tower
The Bell Tower of Haikou was built in 1929. The project was initiated by
the patriotic businessman Zhou Chengmei, and was completed by businessmen
in Haikou as well as overseas Chinese whose hometown is Hainan. The tower
has five stories, and the big bell resides at the top storey. The tower is
walled with red bricks and white lime. Looking west at the Bell Tower you
can see a mouth to the sea; Zhongshan Road is to its south, while to its
north, it's where Haidian brook enters the sea. In 1987, the old tower was
pulled down because of the extension of Changdi Road; later a new bell
tower was built near the original site. The new Bell Tower is finished on
December 15,1987. The look of the new tower is similar to the old one, but
there are also some renovations. Now the big bell is at the sixth storey,
and it rings every 30 minutes. The new Bell Tower has become another
tourist attraction at Haikou after it was finished; In October 1989, it
was listed among the Eight Scenes of Haikou, with a title of "Gu
Zhong Xin Sheng (Old Tower with New Sound)".
General Feng Baiju's Memorial Pavilion
General Feng Baiju's sculpture is placed on the highest mountain of the
granite made Five-finger Mountain Train. The general looks solemn and
resolute. On the front side of the pedestal is carved Deng Xiaoping's
words "General Feng Baiju" in gold. Behind the sculpture is a
pavilion, which comprises three smaller pavilions and a set of covered
corridor. On the front lintel of the main pavilion is an inscription by
Wang Zhen: "Memorial Pavilion of Feng Baiju"; on the middle wall
is carved "Feng Baiju's Life", while on its sides are two pieces
of relief. The left one depicts a scene of General Feng Baiju leading the
armed revolution of people in Hainan, while the one on the right describes
a grand scene of how the armies in Hainan helped the main force of PLA
sail across the sea and free Hainan Island. Next to the main pavilion are
two corridors. Comments of Feng Baiju by Mao Tsetong, Zhou Enlai and Guo
Moruo are inscribed on the walls of the left corridor while comments of
the revolution work done at Qiongya by Xu Xiangqian Nie Rongzhen and Yang
Shangkun are on the right corridor.
Xiuying Ancient Cannon Fort Xiuying Ancient
Cannon Fort was started to be built in 1887, and completed in the 17th
year of Guangxu (1891). It was built for resistance against French
invasion. Together with Humen, Wusong, and Dagu forts, it is called one of
the Four Famous Ancient Forts in China. The fort still exists now, and the
road, house for soliders, and ammunition depot are preserved intact.
Xiuying Ancient Fort consists of five forts: Gongbei, Zhendong, Dingxi,
Zhenwu, and Zhenwei. The five forts are in a line from east to west,
ranging over 200m. All facing the sea in the north, with sports ground in
the center, they are surrounded with solid city walls. Every fort has a
road under ground, in order to set up the connection between the fort and
the house for soliders or ammunition depot. The surface of the fort is an
ellipse, half-burrow with steps to the ground.
Holiday Sea Beach Covering an area of 45
ha, 6km in length, Holiday Sea Beach lies in the west of Haikou. It is
near Xiuying Bathing Beach in the east, and ends at Wuyuan River in the
west. It is next to Qiongzhou Strait in the north, and reaches the western
extension line of Binhai Road to the south.
On Holiday Sea Beach, the natural scenery is beautiful, and the man-made
spots are wonderful. You can see the green trees around, feel the gentle
sea wind, look at the snow white beach, and enjoy the sunshine. The
sunlight, beach, sea, and coconut trees form a graceful contrast, and make
a magnificent picture. You can enjoy the life of appreciating the sunrise
at dawn, and the sunset glow at duck, looking at the city proper in the
day-time, and listening to the tides at night. From east to west, the
beach is divided into four functional areas including Water-sports Area.
Seafood Restaurant, Beach Sun Bathing Area, and Holiday Resort. It
contains water motorboat center, swimming equipment renting center,
bathing center, water-game garden, beverage center, tourist souvenir shop,
beach volleyball yard, beach football field, barbecue ground, boat, and
parachute center, etc.
Holiday Sea Beach is a combination of natural scenery and man-made spots,
which contains water sports, beach sports, sightseeing, relaxation and
entertainment. It shows fully that Haikou is a resort for public
relaxation, boasting the characteristics of an international tourist city
at the tropical seaside.
Ma'anling Crater Ma'anling
Crater is one of the best-preserved extinct volcano craters in the world,
and it is famous among the geologists for being "the real volcano
museum with considerable scale in China". It has a double cone shape.
With the north and south peaks, it has a hollow in the middle. Seen from
distance, it is like a saddle, hence the name. 30 isolated hills are
scattered around it, and all of them are the result of the volcano
eruption. The hills and the crater face each other at a distance, and make
a wonderful scene with Ma'anling Crater at the center.
Only 222m above sea level, Ma'anling is the commanding point of Qiongshan
City. Getting to the top of the hill, looking around, you will feel free
and marvel at its vastness. Looking north, you can see the misty Qiongzhou
Strait. Inside of the hills, ripe litchi and other fruits look so
beautiful.

Mangrove on Dongzhai Port Dongzhai
Mangrove Natural Reserve is the biggest swamp forest in China, covering
four districts, such as Sanjiang and Yanfeng. It is more than 50km long
and occupies 60,000mu. The trees here are 10 meters in height, with
flourishing prop root and board-shaped root under water. When the tide is
up, they are soaked. The roots with different length sustain the large
crown of the tree. The trunks of the lower part have various shapes. Some
look like the elephant drawing water, some like the unreal image of dragon
palace, some like immortal watching the sea and the landscape is really
unique and fascinating. There are pieces of Greenland on the sea, and
water birds fly freely among them. At this time, if you take a boat to the
mangrove forest, you will think you are in a fairyland. When the tide
ebbs, you can walk in the circuitous path in the forest, sometimes you can
see cygnet, red-crowned crane resting here. Nowadays, it is built to be a
development zone for vacation and sightseeing.
