Scenic Spots and Historical Sites

1. Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall
Located in Dongfeng Zhong Road, Guangzhou, it was built with the funds raised by the people of Guangzhou and overseas Chinese to commemorate Dr. Sun Yat-sen. The memorial hall is a palatial structure, completed in 1931. Due to the magic effect of mechanics and acoustics, there is no pillar inside the structure and echo is negligible. A bronze statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen stands in the square in front of the memorial hall.

2. Zhenhai Tower
Standing on the Yuexiu Hill, the tower was built by Zhu Liangzu, a general of the Ming Dynasty. 5-storeyed, the tower is built with red wall and green tiles, appearing magnificent, and is a well-known ancient structure in Guangzhou. Commanding an open view of the distance, one can enjoy the beauty of the Guangzhou City by mounting the tower. It is now the site of Guangzhou Museum.

3. Site of the former Huangpu (Whampoa) Military Academy
Located on the Changzhou Island of Huangpu, Guangzhou, the academy was founded by Dr. Sun Yat-sen in 1924. It was one of the four famous military academies in the world, rich in cultural relics and historical sites and beautiful in scenery, attractive to tourists, Chinese and foreign.

4. Baiyun Cableway
Located at Mount Baiyun, it is the first single-cycle, double-jaw automatic rope-gripped cableway designed, made and installed by China. Completed on Feb. 18, 1986, it is 1,672 m. long, 198 m. in height difference, capable of carrying 80 cable cars at one time.

5. Yu Ying Lodge
Located in Nancun Town, Panyu City, and completed in the 6th year of the Tongzhi reign in the Qing Dynasty, it is an ancient garden with the charm of Suzhou and Hangzhou and the features of south China. Occupying an area of ______ hectares, the lodge is exquisitely laid out, richly decorated, tasteful and quiet, being one of the four famous gardens in Guangdong and known for its small size and exquisiteness.

6.Guangzhou Grand View of the World
Located in Huangcun Village, Guangzhou, it is a large comprehensive amusement center combining colorful classical and modern arts of the world and offering such recreational programs as artistic performances, sports competitions, festive activities and strange sights.

7. Guangdong Television Tower
Located at the North Peak of Mount Yuexiu, Guangzhou, and completed in 1965, it is the earliest large TV tower built in China. In front of the tower lies a 2,500-sq. m. pigeon square, a habitat of hundreds of pigeons. The ground floor of the tower is a shop for tourist souvenirs and the third floor for lookout.

8. Guangxiao Temple:
Located at Guangxiao Road, Guangzhou, it is the most ancient, and largest temple in south China, preserving a great deal of historical traces and cultural relics. The temple is magnificent and the structure of its halls majestic, being a gem in the treasure house of China’s architecture.

9. Liurong (Six-Banyan) Temple
Located at Liurong Road, Guangzhou, it is a time-honored ancient temple famous in China and abroad. The temple is noted for towering pagoda, luxuriant trees and Buddhist relics. In 1987, three buildings, the Guanyin (Goddess of Mercy) Hall, Benefaction Tower and monks’ living quarters, covering 1,000 sq. m., were added to the temple, giving a new look to the ancient temple.

10. Luofeng Temple
Located at the foot of the Luofeng Peak at Luogang, Guangzhou, it was built in the Song Dynasty. Enjoying a history of over 800 years, it is a cultural relic under the protection of the Guangzhou Municipality.

11. Huaisheng Mosque
Located on Guangta (Light Tower) Road, Guangzhou, it is said to be the earliest mosque built after the introduction of Islam into China in early Tang Dynasty. The Guangta Tower in the mosque is of Arabic architectural style. It is said that during the Tang and Song dynasties, the tower was by the side of the ancient Zhujiang River and a light was hung atop the tower in the night for navigation, hence its name Guangta (Light Tower).

12. Shishi Holy Heart Cathedral
Located on Yide Road, Guangzhou, it is the principal Roman Catholic cathedral in Guangzhou Parish. Gothic in architectural style, the cathedral has its walls and pillars built with granite, appearing magnificent. It is a well-known ancient building by the side of the Zhujiang River with the characteristics of tall tower, huge pillars, peak arch on its roof and floral window lattices.

13. Sanyuan Taoist Temple
Located on Yingyuan Road, Guangzhou, it was built by Bao Jing, the prefect of Nanhai in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Originally named Yuegangyuan, it was renovated in the reigns of Wanli and Chongzhen of the Ming Dynasty, and changed its name into Sanyuan. The main buildings in the temple include Sanyuan Hall, Luzu Hall, Laojun Hall, Alms Hall and Guest Hall. The buildings are tall and simple in shape.

14. Chen Family Ancestral Temple
Located at Liwan Bei Road, Guangzhou, and built in 1894, it is the ancestral temple of the Chen clan in 72 counties in Guangong, used by the clan members to worship ancestors and as a place for study by their children. Covering an area of 6,400 sq. m., it is a representative of folk architecture south of the Five Ridges as well as a key cultural relic protected by the state. It was opened up as the Guangdong Museum of Folk Arts and Crafts in 1959.

15. Former Site of National Institute of Peasant Movement Sponsored by Comrade Mao Zedong
Located on Zhongshan 4th Road, Guangzhou, the site was originally the school building of Panyu (Confucian Temple), the construction of which started in 1370. 36 sessions were held in the institute during the period of the first Kuomintang-Communist cooperation. A memorial hall was built in 1953 with the name of the site inscribed by Zhou Enlai. It is now a key cultural relic protected by the state.

16. Memorial Park to the Martyrs of Guangzhou Uprising
Located on Zhongshan Er Road, Guangzhou, and completed in 1954, the mausoleum covers an area of 18 hectares and embraces such spots as a monument, tombs of the martyrs of the Guangzhou Commune, the tomb of Marshall Ye Jianying, China-DPRK Pavilion and China-USSR Pavilion. In recent years, an amusement park, a body-building ground, a skating rink, and a flower and plant hall were added, making the mausoleum a place combining the functions of commemoration, tourism and education into one.

17. Graveyard of Officers and Men of the 19th Route Army Killed in the War of Resistance Against Japan
Located at Shaheding, Guangzhou, it was built to commemorate the Guangdong officers and men in the 19th Route Army, who died a martyr’s death gloriously in the War of Resistance against Japan in Shanghai on January 28, 1932. The graveyard is magnificent and solemn and at its entrance stands a triumphal arch built of granite in the Roman style.

18. Mausoleum of the Martyrs of Eastern Expedition
Located on the Changzhou Island, Huangpu, Guangzhou, it was constructed to commemorate the instructors and cadets of the Huangpu (Whampoa) Military Academy who died a martyr’s death in 1925 in battles of the Eastern Expedition. Situated at the foot of a hill and beside a stream, the mausoleum is grand and solemn and is also known as the "small Huanghuagang Mausoleum". The historical relics of the Eastern Expedition are displayed in the mausoleum.

19. Memorial Hall of Anti-Britain Struggle by the People of Sanyuanli:
Located on Sanyuanli Street at Guangyuan West Road, Guangzhou, the ancient Sanyuan Temple was built in early Qing Dynasty and its predecessor was the North God Temple. During the Opium War, the people of Sanyuanli swore to resist British aggression and defeated the British invaders, becoming a brilliant banner of anti-imperialist struggle by the Chinese people in modern history. In 1961, it was designated a key cultural relic protected by the state and opened up as a memorial hall keeping the history of anti-British struggle by the Sanyuanli people.

20. Former Residence of Hong Xiuquan
Located in Gonglubu Village of Huadu City, it was the place where Hong Xiuquan, leader of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, lived, studied and carried out his initial revolutionary activities. It is now a key cultural relic for national preservation.

21. Hong Xiuquan Memorial Hall: Located in Xinhua Town of the Huadu City, it keeps the historical material of Hong Xiuquan and displays the historical relics of the heroes of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom of the Handu City.

22. Sanhua Village Memorial Architectural Complex
Located on the east side of the No.107 National Highway in Huadu City, it has a history of 130 years. The complex is magnificent and unique in .architecture and decoration. It is a cultural relic with relatively high value in academic research, tourism and education.

23. Conghua Tropic of Cancer Marker Tower
Located in Taiping Town, Conghua City, it is the largest geographical marker of the Tropic of Capricon and the Tropic of Cancer currently in the world. At 12:00 noon during every Summer Solstice, the sunshine projects through the hole at the top of the tower perpendicularly on the central point at the bottom of the tower, forming a spectacular sight of having a pole set up under the sunshine without any shadow on the ground.

Museum

1. Museum of the Tomb of the King of Southern Yue in Western Han Dynasty
Located on Jiefang North Road, Guangzhou, it is composed of the protected area of the Tomb of the King of Southern Yue, the principal exhibition tower and a comprehensive tower. On display are over 1,000 pieces of valuable cultural relics unearthed from the 2,000-year-old underground palace and the tomb of the King of Southern Yue.

2. Guangzhou Museum
Located in Zhenhai Tower in Yuexiu Park, Guangzhou, and founded in 1929, it is one of the earliest museums in China.The exhibition of the history of Guangzhou in the museum presents a general survey of the historical development of Guangzhou over the past 4,000 years along with valuable cultural relics and material.

Places for Visit

1. Guangzhou Jadeware Workshop: Located in Liwan District, Guangzhou, it mainly produces jade ornaments, jade battery molds, etc. Its jade ornaments are all made of jadeite produced in Burma and are much welcomed by consumers at home and abroad.

2. Nanfang Jadeware and Jewelry Industrial Company: Located on Xiajiu Road, Guangzhou, it is one of the largest jade carving factories in China. Its products such as jadeite ornaments, jade balls and carved articles are exquisite and well-known.

3. Daxin Ivory Factory: Located on Daxin Road, Guangzhou, it is one of the main factories producing ivory carvings in China. The factory is most famous for producing openwork ivory balls with very high artistic attainments. Visitors to the factory can watch the on-the-spot performance of the carvers.

4. Yangcheng Huirong Fishbone Painting Art Development Center: Located on Xingang West Road, Guangzhou, it has in its collection such fishbone paintings as "Epang Palace of the First Emperor of Qin", "River Scenes at the Qingming Festival." Ms. Liu Huirong, the inventor of fishbone painting, held an exhibition on her fishbone painting works in the Capital Museum, which caused a sensation among Chinese and foreign audience. Her works were called "rare treasures".
