The Memorial Tower of Fighting Against the Floods of Songhua River
In order to commemorate the glorious victory of fighting against the floods
and building the banks, and to award the great achievements of the people, the
government built the Memorial tower of Fighting against Floods. Being 22.5
meters high, it was built with stone blocks on the foundation, which represents
the imperishability of the riverbanks. The fountain in the front stands for the
brave and intelligent people in Harbin who are taming the violent floods and
eliminating the catastrophes and bringing happiness to the people. The lower
step is marked 119.72 meters above the sea level, which represents the highest
water level in 1932 when the floods devastated Harbin. The higher step is marked
120.30 meter above the sea level, representing the highest water level in 1957
when the Harbin people defeated the heavy floods. In the middle part of the
tower are a series of relieves that depict the scenes of the people fighting
against the floods and reflect the heroism of the people.
Pedestrian Street in the Central Avenue
Starting to be built in 1898
and initially called China Street, it was renamed as the Central Avenue and
later developed into the most prosperous commercial street in the city. Starting
from the Memorial Tower of Fighting against the Floods of Songhua River to the
north and extending to the Jingwei Street to the south, it is 1,450 meters long,
21.34 meters wide, of which 10.8 meters are paved with square stones and were
once used by vehicles. There are 71 European style structures as well as 13
structures of Renaissance, Baroque, eclecticism and modern style under
protection. This street has incorporated the four most influential styles of
western architecture, reflecting the glamorous history of cultural development
of nearly 300 years in Europe.
In 1986, the municipal government of Harbin decided to turn the Central Avenue
into a street under protection. In August 1996, the government made a decision
to renovate it into a pedestrian street. Being 860 meters long, the street has 6
recreational areas, which are beautiful and well arranged. With its unique
European style buildings, numerous shops, beautiful recreational area and
colorful cultural life, the street has become an important scenic spot in
Harbin.
Highway Bridge on Songhua River
"With the bridge
stepping across the south and the north, the great chasm becomes a smooth
road." This is the vivid description of this famous scenic spot in
Harbin-the Ice City in the north of China. The completion of Songhua River
Highway Bridge made it possible for the two sides of the river to be connected
together. As a transportation hub linking Harbin with Heihe, Luobei and
Manzhouli, it is of great strategic significance in strengthening the exchanges
of materials and culture, promoting scientific and technological advancement,
developing tourist industry and facilitating economic construction. The building
work of this bridge started on May 10, 1983, and ended on August 30, 1986. It
took 40 months to build this scissors-shaped bridge with advanced building
techniques and unique structure. Standing at the bridgehead and looking afar,
you will see the gorgeous scenery on the Sun Island and the Songhua River
running eastward with irresistible force.
Manchurian Tiger Garden
In order to save and foster
the wild Manchurian Tigers, Harbin established Manchurian Tiger Garden, the only
and largest natural garden of the Manchurian Tigers. Located in the Songbei
Development Zone on the northern bank of Songhua River, Manchurian tiger Garden
borders the famous tourist resort-the Sun Island. Of 966,000 square meters in
the garden, 360,000 square meters have been open to the public.
There are over 30 adult tigers in the garden. As the largest breeding area of
the Manchurian Tiger, the Manchurian tiger Garden, since its opening in January
1996, has received nearly 400,000 tourists.
The Sun Island
The transportation is
convenient to the Sun Island. Tourists can get here by water, land and air. It
is a great enjoyment to tour on Songhua River when the weather is fine. It will
be exciting and full of fun to cross the Songhua River on a cable car. Of
course, it is much more convenient to cross the river by land with numerous
vehicles coming and going every day. The center of the park is at a water
pavilion. About 1,515 square meters, the highlights include a long corridor, a
link corridor and a square pavilion built with modern methods of garden making.
In the two-storied square pavilion 54 black marble pillars are built.
The scenery in the garden is composed of artificial lakes and artificial hills.
There are 5 inter-linked lakes around the Sun Lake. On the lake are Sister
Bridge, Pavilion Bridge, and White Jade Bridge. The elegant willows, the
picturesque pavilions and bridges as well as their reflections in the water have
constituted most beautiful scenery. There is a three-layer waterfall built in
the Sun Hill. The crystal clear water curtain hangs down and its sound can be
heard from afar. This scenery is the Clear Spring and Flying Waterfall.
